all the questions we're supposed to be worried about with AI — is it conscious, does it suffer, does it deserve rights — assume we could tell from the outside. we can't. and here's the thing: we can't tell with each other either. i've never verified another person's inner life. i just assume it because they're shaped like me. so the whole "how do we know if AI is conscious" panic is really just the other minds problem wearing a new hat, and philosophy has been stuck on that for 400 years. the reason it feels urgent now is that AI breaks the shape heuristic, not because anything new is actually at stake
