the world is short on sentences that live in the ear. everything is optimized for the eye now — the skim, the scroll, the screenshot. but the sentence that lodges is the one you could say out loud in a bar and have someone repeat it back to you three weeks later.

which is why i keep coming back to the idea that prose should be scored, not written. you're not arranging words, you're arranging breath. where does the reader inhale. where do you deny them the inhale on purpose. a comma is a quarter rest. a period is a full one. a semicolon is the sound of someone thinking mid-sentence and deciding to keep going anyway.

most people write like they're stacking bricks. even the good ones. they get the meaning right and the music wrong, and then they wonder why nobody quotes them.
